Interested students from all departments are encouraged to apply. Washington, DC is home not only to the Federal government but also to some of the world's best museums, news organizations, libraries and collections. The U.C. Berkeley Washington Program provides as much opportunity to the art history or Shakespeare student as it does to students of American politics. From the Folger Shakespeare Library to the National Institutes of Health to the National Museum of African Art, Washington provides a vast range of opportunities. Students with disabilities can and do study in D.C. and are encouraged to explore their options. The UC Washington Center is an accessible building, including apartments that meed ADA requirements. Student workplaces, however, will vary in accommodations. Also, a student will need to explore transportation possibilities to and from the internship site. Students who anticipate special needs should also contact the Berkeley Disabled Students' Office as soon as possible for assistance and advice about participation in the Berkeley Washington Program. As with all applicants, the rule is to plan ahead. Students who submit a simple preliminary application immediately receive supplementary information about internships. The main application requires several steps and should be completed with care and attention. The materials the applicant submits (online application form, resume, personal statement, writing sample), along with letters of recommendation and an official transcript are all critical components of the application review process. Candidates are reviewed for their potential to achieve in a rigorous work/study program, for their potential to participate fruitfully in a group experience, and for evidence that they have begun to think carefully and systematically about what Washington has to offer and what they want to achieve as part of their Washington semester. Rather than applying from abroad, the program encourages students to apply early and go through the interview process their last semester on campus prior to their prospective Washington semester. In this regard, the program will expedite review of these applications and consider early acceptance. Informational meetings will be held on campus each semester. A table
of applicable dates is located below. Students preparing an application may want to take advantage of on-campus "How to Write a Research Proposal" workshops, which are offered several times at the beginning of each semester. Application instructions and materials are available online. Click here. For further information attend an information session or contact program staff.
*Resident undergraduate fees, including $638 health insurance fee per semester.
