Director, U.C. Berkeley Washington Program
Salary range: $58-224 – $88,548
The University of California at Berkeley invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the University's Washington Center Program, located in Washington D.C., effective 7/1/08. The primary mission of the Program is to provide an intensive single-semester academic and internship experience for UC Berkeley undergraduates in the nation’s capital. Associated with this is a secondary mission to serve as a focal point for the presentation of UC Berkeley and its activities to the Washington, DC community, especially to Berkeley alumni in the area. The Director is in complete day-to-day control of the Program’s operations, both administrative and academic. S/he manages the unit and its budget, supervises its full-time staff person, collaborates as required with the other UC campus programs housed in the UC Washington Center and with the Center’s management, oversees the educational and residential experience of the 25-30 Berkeley undergraduates enrolled in the program each semester, and teaches the intensive research seminar which is an intrinsic and mandatory part of the students’ academic commitment.
Rank and salary will be determined by education and experience. Duties, both administrative and academic, include: teaching the research seminar; planning of elective courses; recruitment of faculty and graduate student instructors; selection, field placement and supervision of student interns; collaboration with the program’s campus office; coordination of the faculty advisory board; managing relations with alumni; etc.
Qualifications: administrative ability, leadership qualities, exemplary teaching (preferably at university level), academic achievement (Ph.D. preferred), preferably in the humanities or social sciences. Knowledge of and experience in the Washington community are highly desirable.
