As Dean of the Undergraduate Division in the College of Letters and Science, Professor Holub supervises three units: College advising; six interdisciplinary programs in UGIS and, together with the Dean of International and Area Studies, six teaching programs dealing with international affairs; and various enrichment programs for the College and the campus, including freshman and sophomore seminars, undergraduate research, and external scholarships. Professor Holub sees the enhancement of undergraduate education as his primary goal. To this end he has developed the Letters & Science Discovery Courses, a program that highlights a liberal arts education by putting distinguished teachers in front of students in general education courses. Because Berkeley's undergraduate population comes from such a linguistically diverse background, he has initiated courses in public speaking in the College Writing Programs. At the same time he has implemented reforms that will mean the more efficient use of College and campus resources. His office also monitors student access to courses and majors. |
