d. Undergraduate Research Conferences

There are many opportunities for undergraduates to present their research findings in a conference setting. For instance, some special classes culminate in a conference or a symposium. Integrative Biology, for example, offers a thirteen-unit field research course in Tahiti, which culminates in a symposium in which students present the results of their research. Other departments offer opportunities for students engaged in their own independent research to present their work. For instance, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science organized a well attended poster session during Research Month in April (see above) in which more than one hundred students who had signed up for independent-study electives with faculty members presented their work to the engineering community at large. Similarly, the Physics Department held its First Annual Undergraduate Poster Session in spring 1999, again in conjunction with Research Month. The event was very successful and generated a lot of interest in research among undergraduates. Finally, the Psychology Department regularly hosts a department-wide forum at the end of the year, in which seniors orally present their research results. This gives students a chance to answer questions about their research posed by other students, faculty members, graduate students, and staff members.
