UGIS Recruitment Policy

GRADUATE STUDENT INSTRUCTORS

The policy for recruitment, selection and mentoring described below is observed for all courses which are offered as UGIS courses. The policies for GSI hiring, preparation and mentoring observed in the six group majors in UGIS vary somewhat depending on a number of circumstances, including the procedures mandated by the home department of the instructor, and whether or not the course is cross-listed.

Since courses in Group Majors are staffed by instructors from different departments in L&S and from the PS&C's, there is a certain amount of variability in the ways that GSI's are recruited, selected and mentored, based on the practices and rules of relevant units.

READERS

Students interested in becoming readers should contact the faculty directly after reviewing the schedule of classes at the start of TeleBEARS. Many of the major programs below have a listing of faculty contact information on the departmental webpage.

AMERICAN STUDIES

Recruitment:

Notifications of GSI positions are generally sent to relevant departments across the campus, and departments are asked to notify graduate students through bulletin board postings, web pages and/or email of the jobs. In addition, the 62 affiliated faculty in AS are notified of possible job openings, and asked to post information in their departments if they know of possible applicants. (Note: the number of departments notified for any particular version of AS10 is dependent on the content of the course and the approach of the particular instructor. For example, the when the course was taught by an instructor from English, 20 departments/PS&C's were notified. When a person from film/women's studies taught the course, candidates were recruited from 5 or 6 units. In one case, the instructor recruited candidates from his home department.)

Selection:

Selection methods have varied slightly, depending on the norms and expectations of faculty from different departments. In most cases, GSI's are asked to submit statements about their research, scholarly interests and their teaching experience in lieu of formal a. In some semesters, the final selection has been made after applicants were interviewed by the instructor and the Co-Directors of the major, and in other cases, the instructor made the final decision.

Preparation and Mentoring:

GSI's invited to teach in AS10 are expected to have prior teaching experience, and to have observed the preparation requirements of their home department--i.e. have completed a 300 level course or its equivalent. Instructors meet regularly with the GSI's throughout the semester, and attend at least one meeting of each section.

COGNITIVE SCIENCES

All Cognitive Science courses which employ GSI's are cross listed with the Departments of Psychology and/or Linguistics. Procedures for recruitment, hiring, and mentoring are determined by the home department of the instructor.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

The policy regulating the hiring, preparation and mentoring of GSI's for Environmental Sciences courses is based on the procedures of the home department of the instructor of the course.
