UGIS Commencement Information

Commencement Ceremony 2012

Commencement is a ceremony, a celebration for you and your family of the completion (or near completion!) of your college years. If you wish to graduate, i.e., receive your degree as of the end of this May, you must be on the degree list. To do this you must officially inform the College of Letters and Science that you are in the process of completing your final courses and wish to be awarded a bachelor's degree. Signing up for commencement does not put you on the degree list; nor does getting on the degree list register you for the ceremony.

Please don't forget that Commencement and Graduation
are two entirely separate events!

Registering to participate in the UGIS commencement ceremony is done on the web. To reserve a seat for yourself at this year's ceremony, and to make sure your name appears in the program, please visit your major's graduation website using the link that will be e-mailed to you in March. There is a short exit survey on this site preceding your registration.

Buy Guest Tickets
Participating graduates do not need a ticket for themselves, but everyone else does. (Tickets are $6 each. )There are no limits on the number of tickets you can buy. Sales begin Tuesday, April 3rd at the Zellerbach box office and can be made by check, cash or credit card. Unless we sell out there will be sales at the Greek on May 17th. You can also buy them online for a small additional fee. We have sold out in the past, so don't put this off!
Rent Regalia
The ASUC has everything you need-caps & gowns, announcements, etc. Check out "caps and gowns" on the Cal Student Store site or stop by the Graduation section near Textbooks
Name card and photo information
You will fill out a name card when you arrive at the Greek so that when you cross the stage to receive your diploma the faculty member at the podium can read out your name. A professional photographer will take pictures of all the graduates. If you want to order the photographs taken of you that day be sure to include your email information on the back of the name card.
The Day of the Commencement Ceremony
- Doors open at 8. Graduates should arrive backstage by 8:30.
- Parking is a pain, and you don't want to get sweaty hiking to the Greek, so start early
- Ceremony begins at 9:00
- Champagne reception begins approximately at 11:00 the Campanile
- Don't forget your guest tickets. Seating is first come, first served; late guests may be forced to sit on the grass
- GRADS: BE SURE TO FILL OUT A NAME CARD available at the tables behind stage so that your name can be read aloud (and correctly!) at the podium.
- We suggest that guests bring hats, water bottles, and sunscreen if hot, or jackets and umbrellas if cold or drizzly
- No alcoholic beverages will be allowed
- Graduates will form lines by major backstage for the processional. Look for the signs with your major.
- Departmental Citation winners should report to staff backstage (look for the STAFF badges) so they can be placed at the head of the line for their major
- Graduates will be seated by their major according to the chart provided above.
- The grads within each major are not organized by name, that's why you must have a name card filled out to be read when you receive your diploma!
- Please be alert for additional announcements over the loudspeakers backstage prior to the ceremony.
Since they don't give out our diplomas at commencement, how do I get mine?
If you are completing your coursework this semester, are on the current degree list, and are not notified by L&S that there is a problem, you should expect to graduate. "No news is good news," as no one will tell you that you have graduated. Graduation won't be official until early September. If you need proof beforehand, you can contact the Registrar's office mid-June for a Certificate of Completion. Diplomas are mailed to graduates' permanent addresses approximately 3-4 months after completion of all courses. Please check the Office of the Registrar site to make sure that it gets to you. http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Default.aspx?PageID=diplomas.html
