UGIS Commencement Information

Commencement Ceremony 2008

Commencement is a ceremony, a celebration for you and your family of the completion (or near completion!) of your college years. If you wish to graduate, i.e., receive your degree as of the end of this May, you must be on the degree list. To do this you must officially inform the College of Letters and Science that you are in the process of completing your final courses and wish to be awarded a bachelor's degree. Signing up for commencement does not put you on the degree list; nor does getting on the degree list register you for the ceremony.

Please don't forget that Commencement and Graduation
are two entirely separate events!

Making Sure Your Name is in the Program
You must do this no later than THURSDAY, APRIL 24th. Registering to participate in the UGIS commencement ceremony is done on the web. To reserve a seat for yourself at this year's ceremony, and to make sure your name appears in the program, please visit your major's graduation website using the link that will be e-mailed to you by the end of March. There is a short exit survey on this site preceding your registration.
Guest Tickets, Parking and Special Seating
You will need to know how many tickets to buy for your guests. Also, hotels fill up quickly, so if people are coming from out of town and they need a hotel room, book it early. For special commencement parking info, check out the Parking and Transportation website (Information for 2008 should be available in early April. When you go to the site, click on "Special Event Parking" in the left margin and it will bring up Commencement as an option.) If anyone needs special seating (disabled, or elderly guests), please contact our main office at 642-0108.
Buy Guest tickets
at Zellerbach box office for $3.50 each. Participating graduates do not need a ticket for themselves, but everyone else does. There are no limits on the number of tickets you can buy. Sales begin Monday, March 31st and can be made by check, cash or credit card. Unless we sell out there will be sales at the Greek on May 21st. You can also buy them online for a small additional fee. We have sold out in the past, so don't put this off!
Rent regalia
The ASUC has everything you need-caps & gowns, announcements, etc. Call them at 510.642.9000 x681 or stop by the Graduation section of the Cal Student Store.
Name card and photo information
We want to make sure we pronounce your name correctly at the ceremony, so come by and pick up a name card before May 21st. You will hand this card to a faculty member at the podium so that your name can be read correctly. They will be available in mid to late April from your major advisor's office or 301 Campbell Hall. You may also want to order the professional photographs taken of you that day. More information is available at the photographer's website.
The Day of the Commencement Ceremony
The Day of the Commencement Ceremony:
- Doors open at 8
- Graduates line up backstage by 8:30
- Ceremony begins at 9:00
- Champagne reception begins approximately 11:00 at the Campanile
- Parking is a pain, and you don't want to get sweaty hiking to the Greek, so start early
- Don't forget your guest tickets. Seating is first come, first served; late guests may be forced to sit on the grass
- Bring your white name card so that your name can be read aloud (and correctly!) at the podium
- Suggest that guests bring hats, water bottles, and sunscreen if hot, or jackets and umbrellas if cold or drizzly
- No alcoholic beverages allowed
Since they don't give out our diplomas at commencement, how do I get mine?
If you are completing your coursework this semester, are on the current degree list, and are not notified by L&S that there is any problem, you should expect to graduate. "No news is good news," as no one will tell you that you have graduated. Graduation won't be official until early September. If you need proof before then you can contact the Registrar's office mid-June for a Certificate of Completion. Your diploma should be ready for pickup at 120 Sproul in October. It will not be mailed to you unless you arrange for it in advance and pay the mailing costs.
